👋 Anyone else building, interested in or know others who are thinking glue code for microservices/FaaS solving observability in a distributed architecture - future of cloud programming …. trying to find my tribe 😉
k
@Charlie may be one, for this thread on distributed computing that has unfortunately gone past our search horizon: https://futureofcoding.slack.com/archives/C5T9GPWFL/p1557434052245400

if API glue is your jam, might want to have a look at any of: IFTTT, origami, refinery.io, bubble.io, webflow, zapier, n8n, tray.io, to name a few. Not sure who of those is in here?
s
@tbabb those are all low-code/no-code. I want code. I want an open source cloud programming language that glues stuff so I can build fast.
@Kartik Agaram Charlie and I are in touch already 😄 Thank you for pointing him out 👍 ❤️
@tbabb I’m thinking the next Heroku, the next Mulesoft, the a Kubernetes PaaS. Strong emphasis on enterprise on-prem deployments.
t
Darklang? That'd be @pbiggar and @ellenchisa
s
@tbabb Dark is proprietary and replaces everything with strong opinions. I built Storyscript.io - fully open source with far far fewer opinions - my original post is looking for a community not necessarily a product.
l
@Steve It's a bit early, though I'm working on a "data/logic" medium, partly were you may declaratively bind together "external providers" of input/output streams. Was really excited to see your Storyscript.io, as well as the OMG spec. Auto-discovery looks awesome!
d
There's a commercial I can't find anymore, with a young guy walking through his house, commanding random things to do stuff. "Fridge, what's the weather? Toaster, send an email. Kitchen, turn on the TV". Something like that. Had anyone seen this?
😆 3
s
@Leonard Pauli Would love to hear about your theories and maybe some feedback from our decisions at Storyscript. I strongly believe there should be more collaboration in this area of R&D.
l
Big YES for more collaboration! Would be happy to look into it more (though again, my project is still in it's early phase, so I got many theories and ideas, but less data to back them up 🙂 ), saw your DM 🙂
z
Yep. I am looking at building glue code for enterprises using Dev ops and Pilot
s
@Zubairq We recently pivoted from hard-core developers and dev-ops. Originally Storyscript was marketed as glue code for microservices but it just did not catch after 2 years of trying. We had successful POC’s but developers were hyper resistant to change and they kept reverting to the old-ways of thinking. So we just took the abstraction up A LOT higher and focusing on “tomorrows developers”
z
@Steve Oh wow, I never used Figma before, that seems awesome!!!Âą Ok, I guess I first need to understand the "why" of storyscript and understand what it is first. It looks very cool..
s
The “why” is simple 🙂 We believe everyone can code, but to be a coder today is riddled with soooo much complexity. Storyscript provides the power of coding but in a low-code like way for everyone to build amazing tools together and learn how to code while building real apps.
Today there are 20m developers. I believe in short time we will have 100m with products like Storyscript that make coding simple.
z
@Steve Ok, thanks for the "why". Let me try out StoryScript and see if it can solve the issues I face and want to solve. If so then I can stop working on this myself
s
It’s not available to try until Q2 next year. Private beta will start in February
z
Super, I will be hoping to be part of the private Beta.. Feb is good timing too as I am trying to learn the landscape. By the way, you say "*glue code for microservices/FaaS solving observability in a distributed architecture*". So does StoryScript have a Kubernetes/OpenShift/Istio story?
s
Yes, we are on K8S, but we don’t talk about it much as we believe it’s irrelevant to our users. None the less, we will have a “high-tech” page describing how we did it which goes into the nuts-n-bolts of it. The truth is, the more you need to explain the less valuable it is. If it “just works” than no questions will be asked. 😉
