It was actually a genuine question -- I'm not sufficiently familiar with these academic rituals, and whilst I think I know the answer I do need it spelled out to me. If I don't work for someone who pays for plane tickets, will I be excluded from this opportunity for academic discourse?

@Nick Smith Unfortunately the way this sort of informal workshop works depends upon being physically present to have deep interactions.

Are the talks on papers instead of demos?

The "Call for Submissions" page states that "Papers should be in the conference format. Authors may choose to have their paper published in the proceedings." Does "should" and "may" allow for submitting papers in other formats, particularly where the author is not interested in having their paper published in the proceedings?
