What are the non-conventional animation tools that exist out there? I'm looking for original user interfaces for making animated sequences on a computer. By original UI, I mean something different than selecting an item, setting a keyframe, moving along the timeline, etc. Dynamic modifiers or simulation based effectors in 3D software qualify as non-conventional (non-keyframing animation). Music inspired sequence makers qualify as well. Here's an example of an original looking animation tool (I haven't tried it): https://iorama.studio/ I'm also interested in research and white papers investigating non-conventional UIs in computer graphics. For example: • Determining the Benefits of Direct-Touch, Bimanual, and Multifinger Input on a Multitouch Workstation https://graphics.pixar.com/library/MultiTargetUserStudyA/paper.pdf • Eden: A Professional Multitouch Tool for Constructing Virtual Organic Environments https://graphics.pixar.com/library/Eden/paper.pdf • Proton: Multitouch Gestures as Regular Expressions https://graphics.pixar.com/library/ProtonChi/paper.pdf • Investigating the Design and Development of Multitouch Applications https://www2.eecs.berkeley.edu/Pubs/TechRpts/2012/EECS-2012-233.pdf Do you have some links to share? Thank you!

I assume everyone in this Slack is familiar with Bret Victor’s work, regardless of their interpretation of his work.

I believe there are people who have used Orca to drive animation. Orca is mostly used as a sequencer for music, but since it doesn't have any sound generation ability itself and instead needs to be connected to an external synth, people are connecting it to all sorts of other things, like game engines. https://hundredrabbits.itch.io/orca

I believe someone in the community (can't remember who) worked on LittleBigPlanet, which could be used to create animated sequences. And of course there's Dreams coming out very soon, which I haven't used by probably has some interesting animation tools in it.

Very interesting thanks!
I am of course aware that you are exploring this space with Hest. As a side note, I googled "ivan reese hest" but I couldn't find the write-up where you talked a bit about Hest.

That's the only public writing I've done, other than a lot of frustrated tweeting.

Have you looked at Quill? https://quill.fb.com/

Yep! Mostly through Goro Fujita’s demos: https://www.twitter.com/gorosart

Tvori is worth looking at in the VR space also https://tvori.co/
