What a clever use of recursion, so the user gets to play with this feature.

I've seen a few folks experimenting with this idea over the years. I think Portal (and the wave of games-playing-tricks-with-portals that followed it, like Stanley Parable and Antichamber) really burst the dam on this sort of gameplay. But this is the first time I've seen someone polish it into a proper game. And the fact that Annapurna are publishing it makes it basically an insta-buy for me.

I am sure I've seen a 2d sokoban style game with similar mechanic, but I can't find it now. It involved some blocks with gaps in and you had to fit them inside each other etc. Maybe I saw a clip on Twitter and it's still in development...

I like the lighting model, reminiscent of The Witness. And this is just the sort of game I enjoy playing.

Hah, so this is my friend Hanford's game
👏 1
he's been working on it for 9 years
played a lot of really early builds
my game Shadow Physics was (partially) an inspiration for him, it's been a loooong journey, I briefly talked about working on it with him to help him ship
looking forward to it
Also you all should check out Recurse
EGW is a goldmine for this stuff, Baba is You was first shown there I think also

Fisherman's tale (VR puzzle game) also has some similarities to Maquette

For those following the thread, EGW is the Experimental Gameplay Workshop, which is a little event within GDC (Game Developers Conference). There have been some fantastic games shown off at the EGW. Totally agree, it's a great place to look for wild ideas. It reminds me a bit of, say, the Emerging Languages Camp within Strange Loop. There are videos of past EGWs on YouTube, if you're interested.

Yep, I came here to mention a Fisherman's Tale. It's far from perfect, suffers from some adventure game randomness, but the world, and the feel is nice.
