FoC Virtual Meetup Thursday May 23rd • 16:00 UTC @Maikel has offered to host a virtual meetup — the first in a good long while, but hopefully something we'll start doing more frequently. This meetup is a remote-friendly way for members of our community to get together, talk about our common interests and ideas, and share a few demos. If you'd like to attend, please RSVP by clicking the 🐘 reaction on this post. All are welcome! If you'd like to attend and you'd like to give a short demo (15 mins max including Q&A) of something you're working on, please add a reply in the thread for this post. It's very likely that the meetup will be recorded and then posted on YouTube, so if you're unable to make it but would like to catch up on what was shared, that option should be there. Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and hopefully a bunch of new ones too!

Demo submissions and general questions about the meetup go here in this thread.
m
Very cool to meet some of you online and talk about our FoC projects! I'll also want to demo myself 🍻 😎
m
I have some things to demo 🙂

I would like to demo a tool for writing and modifying AI prompts which build on each other. This is for a commercial project and as such I have to balance the needs of shipping something useful and observable for my cofounder & prompt engineer vs shipping features for the user. It is a sort of end-user programming environment others may find interesting. I have a small preview from the start of the project https://x.com/refactorordie/status/1786479797213802622

I'd love to attend and get to know people and I'd like to demo calculang (calculang.dev) and maybe surface one or two experimental bits for feedback if I can pull them together in time 🙂
m
I am looking forward to your demos! 👍
g
I would like to attend and learn. I would like to give a demo, if there's time. I'm in the EDT timezone.
m
Awesome @guitarvydas ! We haven't set a time limit yet on the meetup. I think max 1:30, although it depends a bit if more people want to demo.
🎸 1
d
I probably will need to skip the first half hour, but would love to join later if possible. Also, if interest, I would be happy to give a Wikifunctions demo - but if there is too many demos also OK not to

m
I think one more is fine, we just have to be strict on the time limit of 15minutes max per demo 😀.
k
@Maikel Could you compile a list of anticipated demo durations? Mine wouldn't exceed 10 minutes, for example, and I could probably do it with even less time.
m
Yes I'll make a list today or tomorrow morning
We can also make the meeting a bit longer
These are the demo's that we have currently: - Mariano Guerra 15min - Cole Lawrence 15min - Declan 15min - Paul Tarvydas 15min - Denny Vrandečić 15min - Konrad Hinsen 10min - Maikel van de Lisdonk 15min If you need less time, then please let me know :-)
c
I need less time. Maybe 7 minutes with some or zero Q&A
d
Is there still time for another demo? I'd like to demo ReSheet (resheet.dev)
m
Yes, but only 10minutes. And I'll also use only 10minutes for my demo
c
I don’t think it’s very easy for me to carve out more than 90 minutes from a work day, and I’d hate for there to be no discussion. Maikel, what do you think about narrowing the time slots? Maybe presentations can try to focus on just two things like “the big idea” and “the most recent challenge” or “a couple cool features”
i
We've started using a chess clock at Ink & Switch, where presenters get half of the time and discussion gets half of the time. It's been working really well to ensure presenters stay focused and questioners don't dig rabbit holes.
❤️ 3
But it hinges a bit on someone playing referee.
m
split the presenters into two meetups?
c
Maybe there are clear themes between the meetups, but otherwise, I’d prefer to see everything and then if there’s much more to be said, we can encourage a follow up meetup for those interested where the audience can go deeper
m
Splitting into two meetups is for sure a good idea I think so that everybody can get 15min if needed
i
Yeah I think doing one this month and one next month is a good idea.

m
I'll also see if I can find a chess or egg clock timer on my attic 😂
i
The chess clock works really well because then questioners can interrupt whenever they want without the speaker feeling like they're losing their presentation time.

I am trying to make a list of categories of the demos so that we can split up the meeting into two meetups, but I dont know the category for all the demo's.. these the categories I've got so far: • AI • Programming languages • Collaboration • Visual programming • Interactive programming Can everybody who wants to demo please specify in which category your demo belongs? If other categories are needed then don't hesitate to add them
d
calculang fits under programming languages (functional programming) or interactive programming; but what I intend to share is focused on FP (programming languages category)
m
mine is data analysis/visualization + navigation + AI
c
Mine is AI + Interactive programming
d
WIkifunctions probably fits best in "Collaboration"
k
"Interactive programming" sounds like a good one for me, although if I could pick one freely, I'd go for "convivial computing": the goal rather than the technique.
d
ReSheet is interactive programming, I envision visual programming for it, but it’s not there yet
m
@guitarvydas in which category your demo fits?
g
I suggest a new category: Future of Programming. Text-based "code" covers only a small slice of programming, what else is possible? A baby-step towards breaking the ingrained belief that programming of computers is best expressed only as text (false).
k
I suspect that all our demos would fit under "future of programming", but that we have different views of what will/should change in that future.
m
I've been looking at the categories and the main two categories are AI and interactive programming but there's no true separation possible to give each of the two meetup a category in which all the demo's fell. Perhaps it's an idea to split up in order of submission in this thread for now?

I see some thumbs up, so this will be the final schedule for both the meetups (I included a date for the 2nd meetup , but thats only a proposal for now) Meetup #1 - 23-5-2024 - Mariano Guerra - data analysis / visualization + navigation / AI - Cole Lawrence - AI - Declan - Programming Languages (FP) - Maikel van de Lisdonk - Visual Programming / Interactive programming Meetup #2 - (20-6-2024 ?) - Paul Tarvydas - Future of Programming - Denny Vrandečić - Collaboration - Konrad Hinsen - Interactive programming - Daniel Kruger - Interactive programming

FYI - Thursdays tend to be hardest for me to schedule around. I don't know what's in store for me on June 20. If the date sticks and I can't make it, I will send a short video...
m
We can also schedule a different day (and time) for the 2nd meetup , perhaps june the 19th?
👍 2
d
Should we be preparing to speak for 15 minutes, or will 15 minutes be split between speaking and discussion?
m
15 min will be split into 50% presentation and 50% time for discussion (or questions). If you want a different split for your session then let me know. I think total meetup time will probably be something like 75minutes.
👍 2
k
I am 100% sure that June 20 won't be possible for me. And I am not optimistic for any date in June.
i
I hope we can make these a regular (monthly?) event.
I mean, assuming the first two aren't a total bust :)
m
I hope so too, and important I think is that we try to keep it as low barrier as possible
d
I won't be able to do June 20th, sorry.
m
What dates would work in june?
d
For me, for now, June 6, 14, 19?, 21
g
14, 19, 21 OK with me
m
What about @Daniel Krüger and @Konrad Hinsen ? are there some dates that match with your schedules?
k
Best chance for me in June is the week from 24th to 28th. 21st is not completely impossible, but I can't promise yet.
m
Can we find a date in that range @Denny Vrandečić @guitarvydas @Daniel Krüger ?
d
I'm flexible in June, all dates were ok, as long as they're 16:00 UTC or later
m
Would 26th or 27th of june work for @Denny Vrandečić @guitarvydas ? Time will be 16:00 UTC (or maybe a bit later if thats better)
g
Wednesday 26th yes. Thursday 27th - not sure.
d
I could do 26th at 17:00 UTC or later
m
It looks like we have a date and time for our 2nd meetup: 26th of june 17:00 UTC 😀 But first I am looking forward to our meetup tomorrow, see you all there!

r
Would love to attend, nothing to demo for the moment
m
You're more then welcome to join and just watch and/or ask questions about the demo's 😊
j
I assume a meeting link will appear here shortly before it's about to start...?
m
Yes, it will , no worries

This is the link for the zoom meet-up https://ivanish.ca/zoom
d
Link to slides/demo for calculang if anyone wants to poke around after: https://finding-calculang-foc.netlify.app/
m
@Ivan Reese is it already time to announce the next meetup which is planned for 26th of june 17:00 UTC?
