Thought you all might appreciate this. From Programming Paradigms for Dummies: What Every Programmer Should Know by Peter Van Roy

Where would Excel be on this?
d
it's in there if you look. Nonmonotonic dataflow programming 😄
I wonder where APL, J, Joy are in here. (I don't know much about these languages)
g
APL/J are pretty much the same paradigm and I'm not sure how I'd map them on there
Joy would start with Forth and you could kind of put forth on both sides of the axes
so I think you've found the leaks in the abstraction!
you could argue that APL comes out of functional programming but that wouldn't really be historically correct
d
On Excel: wouldn't it be right over to the right in terms of state?
I'm struggling to fit my own language into this framework, and it should explicitly name Excel formulae somewhere, as one of the most popular languages.
Is the author on this Slack? Maybe let's invite them?
d
@Duncan Cragg good idea
d
No reply though 😕
d
@Duncan Cragg he did reply. ?
d
Oh yeah, I don't know how to get real notifications on twitter (i.e. separating replies from algorithm nonsense)
Don't know why it didn't show up in my main stream, although that's algorithm as well of course, things often go missing.

Hot take question: Is the programming paradigm important? Even if Excel were to fit somewhere in this diagram, would it tell you much about what the most interesting aspects are when programming in that environment?
d
It was more about challenging a framework that wouldn't allow it to be placed, but glad to find it can be!
.. or can it? I think it should be far over to the right
part of a subversive streak in me to disrupt the way techies see the world, etc, etc! 😄
