To challenge the idea that live programming/future of code community hasn't 'woken up' to live coding yet. • The first edition of the LIVE workshop in ICSE 2013 acknowledged TOPLAP and live coding as performing art in the history of live programming, included live coding papers and performances etc http://liveprogramming.github.io/2013/ http://liveprogramming.github.io/2013/about.html • By the second edition, there was no engagement with live coding at all. Jonathan Edwards presented a 'manifesto' pretty much denying its existence, starting with: "How will live programming get from our current aspirational demos to use in the real world?" https://2016.ecoop.org/track/live-2016 • By the third edition, live coding was removed from the intro text entirely. https://2019.splashcon.org/home/live-2019

@Kartik Agaram Why the skepticism?
k
Not skeptical, just thoughtful. So far 😄

@yaxu guilty as charged. Nevertheless we’ve had some live coding at the workshops. It’s a shame we seem to talk past each other. You make some great observations above in this thread that I strongly agree with. Perhaps live music and database applications are just too different for us to share much technology

@jonathoda I think we just need a space to exchange ideas in, it's a shame that LIVE isn't it at the moment.
A lot of algorithmic musicians make use of databases, Music Informational Retreival is a pretty big field of research
That said, I think most of the difficult problems in databases are probably solved by now. This is why many great CS minds move to e.g. genetics.. I don't understand the respect for disciplinary barriers.

What barrier? We want to talk about designing programming experiences. We didn’t fly thousands of miles to watch music performances. Anyone wanting to engage with the former is welcome.

Careful -- who's the 'we'?
"[I] want to talk about designing programming experiences." - me too "[I] didn’t fly thousands of miles to watch [them being actually used]." - fair enough, it seems that was a productive and interesting part of the first LIVE workshop though, although I sadly couldn't make it myself.
It doesn't have to be about actual performances though, I'd just like to see more interdisciplinary exchange from all sides
