People can also play piano with their feet, but it isn't easy. I have seen a computer game that lets you program in an isometric-view 3D world, with logic gates, etc., super fancy and clever, so it is possible. Working on small screens is quite cumbersome, and debugging is just infeasible. Debugging a graphical interactive product on a single monitor even 32" in size is a tricky thing (I do it all the time). So just because the kids are used to working on phones doesn't mean it is practical or sensible. It requires way too much human memory to do it that way.

I’d agree that traditional editing-big-text-files programming wouldn’t work well on a small screen, but I think there are other possibilities, particularly for the narrow target of, say, social mobile phone apps or even simple games.

i think fancade is attempting this

You can program on your phone in lots of different ways, its just that generally the UX isn't good
I've tried a lot of mobile game creators when I was doing research for Facebook Horizon, and most of them weren't very good, but there was some ok stuff out there. Ready Maker, Pocket Code. I've tried more traditional coding on a phone also, Android has some apps that are C++ compiles or interpreters for various languages, and I first played with TIC-80 on a phone
Pocket Code was probably the best, although its really limited
Codea looks pretty cool, but afaik it's iPad only
Fancade looks really cool actually, I'll check it out
My favorite mobile game creation environment is probably Warioware DIY, while it was a Nintendo DS game I think it'd probably work as a mobile game...
There are some other DS game creators (like RPG Maker) that might be worth looking at
IFTTT works alright as a limited mobile programming environment, Microsoft TouchDevelop looked like it could have been cool
but they shut it down in favor of MakeCode Arcade, which is a fun programming environment but it doesn't really work on mobile

Fancade is indeed a brilliant product. The idea of using little squares to hold formulas is cute. However none of the aforementioned products hold a candle to the unbelievable success that is "Dreams". The range of software produced, and the quality of the generated products is astounding. It is a Playstation 4 exclusive title, from Media Molecule in the UK, who took 7 years to make Dreams i believe. This studio did Big Little Planet which was a smash hit AAA title. They use the Playstation's "Move" controller to function as a mouse. Warning: getting a PS4 and using immersive games like this could cause hundreds if not thousands of hours of distraction, so please don't blame me a year from now why your own project is lagging for bringing this breakthrough product to your attention.
