I tried to put together a list of all these newfangled Xanadu style “networked notebooks” that are coming out. With the help of Raghuveer and some friends I think I have made a somewhat comprehensive roundup, but I’d love to know if I have missed out any cool ones here: https://github.com/prathyvsh/networked-notebooks

How about you come up with a characteristics list to help tell them apart? What are the main differentiating functions or features? Like Principal Components Analysis: on what dimension do they differ most?

Yeah, that could be of help, I think there are various kinds limits in the kind of operations that can be performed with each of these applications, like transclusion, bidirectional updates, reshaping data etc. But I’m a toddler in this space and this is more to serve a catalogue for inspiration. If I happen to get an understanding of the problem space a bit better, I might start creating a tradeoff matrix. Thanks for the feedback!

Oh no that wasn't my feedback, my feedback is: great start to a very useful project! 😄

So does Jupyter not qualify here? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the space you're delineating

Also, you forgot the granddaddy: Tim's arrogantly-named "World Wide Web"!

Ah, a great resource, thanks 🙂

The act of self-publishing these kinds of interlinked notes (e.g., like Andy Matuschak's notes) has come to be called "Digital Gardens", here's a great Twitter thread that links to some examples https://twitter.com/Mappletons/status/1250532315459194880

There's also networked-notebooks-as-a-vscode-plugin, which seems like a nice alternative that preserves whatever other editing / note taking functionality you've got (if you're a vscode user) https://kortina.nyc/essays/suping-up-vs-code-as-a-markdown-notebook/

This was also posted here a few times, not sure if it merits inclusion: https://szymonkaliski.com/notes/
