📢 Channel renaming in progress. Here's hoping I get it all done before my toddler wakes up 🤞 EDIT: Done for the night. More updates to come, likely on Sunday rather than Saturday. Cheers 🍻

Interesting wrinkle — when you use the #hashtag name for a channel in a message, and then rename the channel, your message is updated to reflect the new name. Most curious, and likely carries a number of second order consequences.

yeah interesting
i
wonder if they store it all as text and just rewrite the messages as-persisted, or if the channel name is somehow transcluded into the message at render time, or something else.
s
yeah more importantly how do you refer to the old name, let me try.. #general
ok you could just edit the msg I guess.

^ Yeah, that's wild. I'm half-tempted to.. okay, gonna do it. Back in a sec.
Renamed it to #your-work to see what would happen. So it looks like they're not doing a totally naive regex rename.
s
wait wat.
shouldn't you change it to # feedback?
i
I could have changed it to anything — I just wanted to see what happened to my message (where the text
#share-your-work
wasn't an automatic channel link). But just in case Slack had some sort of dumb limit about naming channels back to the names they previously had, I went with something I'd have been happy with if we were to end up stuck with it.
(I just spent 20 minutes manually adding everyone to #CGMJ7323Z and cleaning up errors due to their crummy add-people-to-channel UI, so.. can't blame me for being suspicious about Slack's dusty UX corners and hidden cliffs)
