Curious if anyone here has used it and what they think
c
The creator of it is reasonably active on the Slack (@Tudor Girba). It has been on my list for a long time, I want to dedicate a decent amount of time to using it because it looks very promising. I only gave it a very quick look so far
t
Yes, I played with Glamorous Toolkit recently 🙂. I heard good things about it, too.

More seriously: @emmy @Chris Knott I’d be happy to provide details should you be interested.
m
is there any resource on "gtoolkit for non smalltalkers?"
1
that would be nice for people on the fence like me, since I don't know smalltalk I don't know if I would be able to get anything out of it before learning smalltalk
t
The environment comes with a set of introductory material (e.g., slideshows) including an introduction to Pharo
m
I know that the smalltalk syntax fits in a postcard so that would be a good selling point to show that the learning curve is manageable
t
indeed, the syntax does fit on a postcard. And in GT, we have an interactive tool to get you through it, too: https://twitter.com/feenkcom/status/1242760105013248000?s=20

I think I’m going to learn Pharo just so I can use this. The environment is too compelling

In any case, we do agree that as the environment gets more and more complete, our focus is shifting towards documentation of all sorts. Just now, there is a course on Software Modeling and Analysis that is based on GT exercises: http://scg.unibe.ch/teaching/sma. It also includes a few demos.
@emmy I am glad it raised an interest.
To learn Pharo, I would suggest to start from the
Pharo 101

I have been playing with GToolkit for a while, and it’s my main Pharo UI now. It’s definitely worth a look for anyone interested in user interfaces for computing systems. Not sure how accessible it is without some Pharo background.
g
there are a lot of people in the “don’t know smalltalk but interested in GT” club in this very slack. maybe we should form a study group?

I found http://mooc.pharo.org really useful to get into Smalltalk and Pharo

Would be down for a Pharo for GT enthusiasts study group
1
That mooc looks really good, maybe we could go through that since it’s split up into weeks

It's via that MOOC that I got started with Pharo in 2018. Recommended!

Count me in! I guess it is the good timing for me to discover both GT and Pharo/SmallTalk. When I came in this Community I have heard of GT, found it very interesting, but (temporarily) skipped it because of missing time. Now I have more time for stuff like that!
i
Yeah, I'd be up for joining this study group, too. Would someone be willing to volunteer to organize/lead this group? I could also spin up a dedicated channel for this.
t
I’d happily offer help
We will organize a set of live session in the GT Discord community. The next one is an introductory session and will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 5PM CET: https://discord.gg/FTJr9gP You are all welcome to join. Of course, if you’d want to have a dedicated channel here, we’d be happy to offer guidance here as well.

I've spun up a new channel — #C01CD90V1NF — and sent invites to Tudor plus the handful of folks here who expressed an interest in a study group.

Great!

I can help co-organize @Ivan Reese
