I didn't use a thread, before you complain, (a) cos they're a royal pain in Slack and (b) cos this #CEXED56UR channel is one big thread that doesn't get often used for its narrow focus.

Can you elaborate on why threads are hard, Duncan?
d
They come out narrow in the web interface. You don't get notified of great conversations just because you missed the start of one. Even then it's hard to find the follow thread button so I mostly don't bother. The mobile app handles it badly but I can't recall the details of that as I don't use it there often enough. I'll get back to you on that one..

Agreed on those points; even the desktop app has a narrow column for threads, and they are indeed easy to miss. I also find the 'Threads' link in Slack to be confusing because it isn't clear what I have read and what I haven't; or even what is new!

It's highlighted blue when new, for me anyway. But you always have to expand the previous messages to get context which is a pain, especially when it has a lot of stuff and a long history below

Without threading, single topics dominate a page, pushing off or obscuring other issues people raise Threading is just good manners. Would have even been great for Ivan to introduce the topic above, then say "bullet points below in thread"

@Duncan Cragg your points are valid. However, we seem to be stuck with these problems for now. And in the world we do have, the custom seems to be overwhelmingly in favor of threading. So, would you be amenable to joining rather than fighting them/us? (If others feel similarly to Duncan, please 👎 this comment. I'm curious to hear from a potentially large silent minority. I actually mildly prefer zero-threading as well, out of similar FOMO motivations to Duncan's.)
Regarding the follow-thread button and the narrow column for threads: if you follow a thread you'll be able to see it on the main column by clicking on the
Threads
tab.

FOMO 😧😳😵
@Chris G I would only skip threads in #CEXED56UR, or similar low-traffic or one-topic channels.

Oh I got it - yeah, and honestly, these conversations will just play out as they do - no one will have a big problem if a long conversation happens on a main page (have seen it multiple times already)

I have not had the issues with threads mentioned here, despite that I use the Android slack app ... Or I've come to accept them as normal and don't think about it
