Is there enough interest in this community for a research/literature-oriented channel? I read lots of papers and quite often they’re relevant to this community, but I it doesn’t feel appropriate to overload #C5U3SEW6A with academic writing. A dedicated channel could also be a place to help each other with copy editing, proofreading, informal peer-review, etc.

Maybe something like of-literature, of-papers, of-academia, or of-research?

100% for this idea. of-papers would be my suggestion

Proposal to name this [something]-together, since it's not "the future of papers", which is what those "of" names are meant to vaguely allude to.

(Yes I realize I'm doing this in a weird order. Thinking on my feet)

Good point… Hmm… papers-together isn’t quite right, feels like it needs to end in “-ing”… but papering-together isn’t right either….
theorising-together feels too specific, researching-together feels too vague… Maybe papers-together isn’t so bad?
k
learning-together?

I think there’s some benefit to keeping it focused around papers. There’s a risk that learning or research would cause people to be less sure about where their post belongs. Still don’t know of the best name tho. Maybe we need a second word to make it work? Or now that I think of it, if we can’t make it fit the pattern, we could do something like papers, research-papers, academic-writing, etc? I think my vote now is #research-papers

Unrelated to naming, how should the channel be used and what structure should it have? Maybe we just have two kinds of posts: • Papers — with links to the paper(s) plus ideally some description, what we find interesting, or an abstract. And then free/open discussion in the thread • Requests for papers — people looking for certain work, or kinds of work, or pointers in the right direction. The thread can then hopefully surface papers, authors, fields, etc. and if a notable piece of writing is linked in discussion it could be posted outside the thread. Slack even made a plugin which could make this super easy, if someone posts a paper in a thread that someone wants in the main channel they could just slap a 📄 on it or something. Would that be useful/appropriate? Are plugins like that something the free Slack can do? @Ivan Reese

Naming: How about reading-together? We'll de facto use it for papers, but if someone wants to discuss a book I imagine that'd be fine too. It's all about consulting the literature, right?

Usage and structure: I like your suggestions, Orion. I'm up for that, with the caveat that I like to be sort of casual/lax about enforcement to see if other usage emerges organically. Paving cow paths and such.

I have installed the [terribly named] Reacji Channeler app. It's not yet configured — we should bikeshed on which emoji to use.

The plugin recommends a custom emoji which seems like a sensible idea.

Anyone got an icon of a non-responsive, difficult to read on an iPad, badly scanned printout of a pdf?

I agree reading-together is a good name, and your point on enforcement is a good one too. I’m happy with where we've landed. Looking forward to using the channel!

Did we really not think of reading-together until Ivan suggested it?! 🤦🏽‍♂️

All we need now is to install a cozy fireplace in the channel... and to immediately throw all copies of Out of the Tar Pit and No Silver Bullet into the fire.

Should I blast out a message in #CGMJ7323Z to let the broader community know about the new channel?

@Ivan Reese sounds good. Only reason I can think to hold off is if some of the others in this discussion or in the channel want to put a post in to establish a kind of baseline which will help people see how it’s being used. Though now that I think about it, you could just write that in the announcements channel… I say go for it!

We're opening a new channel: #C037X8XMFB3 This channel will be host to in-depth discussions of academic papers and other long, substantial, or deep materials that deserve thorough consideration and reflection. It'll also be a place to request these sorts of materials — if you're looking for papers on a specific topic, post a request in this channel and the audience there might be able to help you find some. Here's how it fits in with our existing channels: #C5T9GPWFL — Deep, substantial discussions emerging from your own thoughts on the future of programming. #C037X8XMFB3 — Deep, substantial discussions emerging from books or academic papers, and requests for such. #CCL5VVBAN — Links to materials that you created, with the discussion focused on positive critique and encouraging feedback. #C5U3SEW6A — Links to materials that you didn't create. #C01932BJGE8 — All other discussions/links that might be of interest to the community. Why are the channels divided in this way? To help the audience find something interesting to read or discuss. Each channel has a different tenor, a different kind of noise, and when they're mixed together they tend to drown each other out. This plurality of channels places a bit of additional burden on those who post — you need to make sure you're posting to a channel that is compatible with what you're posting. When in doubt, you can DM me to ask where to post something, or just give it your best guess.

A couple short thoughts on the above. • When breaking down all the channels relate, it might be worth clarifying ‘emerging from books’ a little bit more, as you did in the first paragraph. I don't know how to characterise it but a book of ‘startup business strategies’ would like not be a fit, and better placed in #C5U3SEW6A. I think this is clear in your writing but it could be reinforced. I'm not suggesting a restrictive criteria, just one that's as clear as possible • IMO you could put “give it your best guess” before “dm me”. I think people do a decent job self-sorting, and having you as a fallback might encourage more posts, instead of people potentially seeing you as a gatekeeper of sorts — even as a perceived uncertainty of social approval of posts, which some may turn into a choice to not engage where they otherwise would have.
