Hello all. I'm an assistant professor at UCF whose research primarily concerns platforms and immersive media. I co-authored a book on the Flash platform (https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/flash) and on adventure games (https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/adventure-games-9781501346545/) and am currently working on an experimental real-time collaborative environment for authoring immersive media content and behavior. I'm very interested in broadening participation and furthering our knowledge of how to match interest, engagement and humanity with computing, and am interested in finding others who share those values. I came here by way of Eve, Codestrates, and have worked briefly with Ted Nelson and am a fan of Bret Victor's work.

Would love to hear the story about your work with Ted Nelson!

I've been meaning to write it up -- but basically, I worked on a fork of the Xanadu project (XanaDesk) for a summer and created a version of it in Flash while pursuing my PhD. I succeeded in visualizing transclusions, implementing his permascroll concept and various link types, including visualizing documents as "wands." I did recommend using HTML and web standards, and with the death of Flash, it'll be difficult to show off the project, but I've been meaning to make a video of it.

I would love to see that! And I bet a number of other folks here would appreciate it, too.

@Chris Knott -- This is a tough one, as adventure games can be so different from one another. I'm going to answer with more than one because they are the "best" in their respective categories. Classic adventure game: Day of the tentacle, though I'm very much enjoying Thimbleweed Park now. Choice-based dramatic adventure game: Telltale's The Wolf Among Us. And best adventure game that defies categorization is Kentucky Route Zero.

(Obligatory nod in the direction of Hypnospace Outlaw, the adventure game for people who dream about windowing systems)

AdventurerGamers once gave their adventure game of year award to Portal 2! I just finished Disco Elysium and it's technically an RPG but feels more like a point-and-click adventure. I never played KRZ but it has been on my list for a while, it featured in an exhibition at the V&A Museum I went to a couple of years ago, I think it'll play it next. Thanks!
