I just watched the FOSDEM'19 talk about SOLID and found it very interesting. I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on this topic. https://fosdem.org/2019/schedule/event/solid_web_decentralization/ Direct link to the video: https://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/fosdem-video/2019/Janson/solid_web_decentralization.webm

As I understand it, Solid is based around protocols that basically require people to run their own servers to participate in the network. Personally, I find https://beakerbrowser.com/ to have a much more compelling vision.

SOLID is about control and ownership of your own data, so yeah people need to rent their own servers to host their data. The only alternative to this would involve a decentralised data storage network. The SAFE Network has plans to integrate the principles of SOLID (if it ever becomes a thing) https://safenetwork.org/ Hopefully if/when other blockchain-ey projects become practical they will support it as well.

SOLID looks DOA to me. Firstly the vast majority of people could care less about the data mining. They are getting a lot of free storage, and unlike the Robodialers who pester us daily in the USA, with callers pretending to the IRS about to send police to your door or any of the other myriad frauds extant, Facebook seems rather benign because you can't see your data being traded, nor do most people realize the complete loss of privacy and control is implicit in the Facebook empire. So i don't see a strong impetus to propel this idea forward. It does also remind me of Xanadu from Ted Nelson where he wanted two way linking of web objects.
