I've never recorded video, but https://futureofcoding.slack.com/archives/C5T9GPWFL/p1586714499350400 just might get me to bulk up here. Anybody have suggestions on where to begin learning about it?
m
what OS are you in?
https://obsproject.com/ is the most cross platform one

Thanks. I'm on Mac.

For quick ones, built it quicktime + ctrl-cmd-N might be enough for simple screen-capture.

If you're on a recent version (Mojave+), you can press Command-Shift-5 anywhere to bring up the new screen capture overlay. The first 3 modes in the floating toolbar that appears near the bottom are for screenshots, and the following 2 are for screen recordings. (This is the same UI that comes up now in QuickTime, but you don't have to launch the app to get to it.) You'll also want to make sure you pick your desired mic input from the Options menu. After you hit record, the stop button will appear in the menu bar on the right. With your recording open in QuickTime, press command-t to trim the start and end.

(Though.. it might be better for us to standardize on OBS, and for me to write up a tutorial we can point people to, so that we don't get a bunch of insufficiently compressed videos that take people like me, stuck on 5mbps internet, forever to watch.)

I thought that we would just upload videos to YouTube, it will do the appropriate compression, no?
i
Yep, that's also an option! Depends on what people are more comfortable doing.

There is always the "unlisted" option on youtube, and then pasting the link here. Their "free" storage + processing for neat playback (jump ahead, faster speed, different sizes) is hard to beat, but I suppose not everyone want to get a google account.
