@Tim Plotnikov we looked at around a dozen options, including zulip, discord, discourse, a plain old forum, mattermost, and a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting. We also now have a matrix bridge: https://futureofcoding.org/community#matrix-bridge

Slack is awesome - it’s how you have and will keep this community

@Ivan Reese I spend pretty much all day in Discord these days. The voice channels are the killer feature because they support screensharing and/or video for any of the participants simultaneously, no need to set up a meeting, just come hang out when you feel like it. LOVE hanging out in VC with people, it's done very well for my post-COVID need for socializing.

All the services have advantages and disadvantages. We looked them in quite a bit of depth in January, which was rather time consuming. We can revisit the subject in future years, but for now, there are other aspects of the community that I'm going to spend my energy on.
(Appreciate the articulation of what you like about it, though! Just want to... let anyone else coming to this thread know that I won't be acting on any potential momentum to move off Slack for a while yet, if ever)

I'm so sorry, I misunderstood and thought you were still looking, hence the plug! (BTW so excited about this community, hope to introduce myself and my project soon, I think y'all might like it!)
