So is it just me or are most of the modern examples universally worse and completely missing the point of this type of book?

Most of them are longer in terms of LOC, they're harder to read for beginners in terms of number of concepts introduced and overall boilerplate.

They clean up some logic and code tricks that are hard to parse or only work in Basic, which is nice

But they're also kind of bloating really simple games...
