I feel like the correct formalism for this would be "wiring diagrams". The only problem: it's a formalism from category theory, and most software devs aren't interested in studying mathematics.

@elbear The best resource for someone who doesn’t (yet) know category theory is the free book “Seven sketches in compositionality” by Fong & Spivak. Several chapters explore uses of wiring diagrams. But be warned, this is a (introductory) mathematics textbook, so don’t expect it to be light reading.
