I haven't posted any updates in a while so here is one :slightly_smiling_face: Recently Automat got:
1. a new Scribblenauts-like style for beta-quality objects,
2. new image processing tools (Leptonica library) - the first user of the "beta" style and
3. an early ability to properly "embed" other apps - this is what the video is about

Integrating GPU compositing of Kitty with a Wayland compositor is very cool and not the most simple way you might have integrated a terminal shell, right? Was the goal a low-latency shell experience, or liberation from Gnome and general unshackling of windows by bringing them into Automat? Very nice!

A very useful feature of Kitty is that it can output real images in a standard way too! Being able to pipe around with that makes the shell much richer!

Oh yeah. I'm now chaotically browsing through <https://wayland.app/protocols/> and reading about different things that I could squeeze out of those embedded windows...

The most basic wayland compositor is about 1k of lines. If you use a library that would be even less code and more features. What's more important is that external windows kind of already "fit" there - the way all the widgets in the Automat UI blend together - they're textures and they behave in a very similar way to wayland clients (I already had the Vulkan compositing &amp; input management to make them work). Wayland window is just another type of widget. Making a terminal would be a quite a bit more work from my perspective!

And re "beta" objects: they are a technique that I use to psychologically distance myself from their lack of polish :P
