here's a fun video that i haven't shared publicly
it's a walkthrough of Hest, with a bunch of questions about how it should work and what it means, my various musings about possible answers, lots of faff
if you've ever seen one of my talks, this will be familiar in that the format is totally bonkers. i really don't want the viewer to get bored.
Give it a few minutes, see what you think, maybe you'll decide to stick around for the full thing. Enjoy!
. It's hard to come up with examples of this but all of the interesting & undiscovered things feel kind of alien, strange & risky before they're discovered. It's a very distinctive feeling. Lots of good things come from chasing it.

wow, since I began listening to the FOC podcast I always thought Hest was some kind of internal joke or reference to a "unicorn" or "utopian" ideal project that you'all used to reference possible ideas or desirable ideas... now I know it's a real project (or was? will be? what is time?)
it's really wonderful. I just downloaded the 40 episodes of the hest podcast and I'll be listening them slowly and stealing considering ideas for my code editor 🙂

yep! it's a real project! i made about 10 prototypes between 2016 and 2019 and then stopped building it but kept thinking about it.

if that podcast spurs any thoughts (of any sort), i'd love to hear them

Whoa the tails switch direction when you play backwards?! Feels like you're reversing flow rather than time, which might be more honest. As a huge fan of time reversal mechanics in interfaces, there's the simple fact that once you can reverse time, the simulation time and the observer time diverge. Then taking another step back: you observe the observer and have three different timelines...

yeah — hest is decidedly about execution in reverse, not rewinding time, but the language i use is casual and inconsistent. 🤷♀️
i want to go to a past that never existed. (episode 38)

i ran into the nested timelines situation when considering undo/redo. also, when considering subcomponents that have their own sense of time. also when considering interfacing with other systems.
