Professionally my background is in physics, I started a data science consulting company, led the AI+Design practice at IDEO, shifted gears completely into "people ops / HR" (I like people even more than coding), and am currently in dabble/explore mode. A few books I think are related to the future of coding: Information Ecologies, Mindstorms, and How To Talk About Books You Haven't Read. Hi! I'm Zak, a software engineer living in Cary, NC, USA. I've been programming professionally for about 8 years and have been interested in better/new ways of doing things for most of that time. I saw a link to https://futureofcoding.org/episodes/061 on hacker news and found it really interesting/rewarding, and after looking through the main site this seems like a place where lots of people are interested in the same kinds of things as me! I have a running doc of things that kind of suck or interesting ideas I come across that involve computing (e.g. Xanadu, Gwern's practice of taking a snapshot of everything he links to, undo at the operating system level, Nix, to name a few) and I'm hoping to have some interesting conversations here!

Ahoy! I'm Josh, a software engineer in Marin (the sleepy, boring part of the Bay Area). I've worked on a variety of things over my 15ish years, including computer vision and (very early) deep learning, the Go compiler and standard library, and secure networking. One of the few threads running through my career is an abiding interest in how developers work and in building things for developers. I'm particularly interested in faster feedback loops, better input mechanisms, power tools, version control, and (recently) how this little AI kerfuffle will play out past co-pilots. I really like weird and experimental stuff, and don't get enough of it in my current life. I'm here courtesy of @Pokey Rule; his description of the demos at a recent London meetup sounded like just my cup of tea. I'm at a career crossroads, so I'm also secretly hoping for a bit of serendipity or inspiration 🤫.

Hello! I’m a software engineer with a focus on ethics, type systems, frameworks, and UI. Most recently I was the tech lead for LinkedIn’s main web app (the .com! But the emails were not my fault). Before that, in reverse chronological order, I: rebuilt the front end for a profitable unicorn no one has ever heard of (Olo), built a Bible web app, did a bunch of random web consulting, built hazards/risk mitigation software with physics models for a tiny company in the energy industry, and wrote avionics software that is, to my knowledge, still flying (though honestly I hope someone has rewritten it 😂). I am currently taking a sabbatical through the end of the year, filling in some of the holes in my CS knowledge (~a minor in music composition, a major in physics, and a Master of Divinity; more or less zero formal CS education) and writing orchestra music. I have been focused specifically on programming languages and frameworks over the past few years—I was the Rust podcaster 2015–2019, and have done more work with TypeScript than anyone ever should (primarily in the Ember.js world). All of that already had me thinking about “ratchets” over “levers” for the practice of software development. (That post is notionally about the job hunt I’m going to start properly at the end of this sabbatical on January 1, but all but the last paragraph or so is more like a statement of what I am thinking in this space!) @Jason Steving mentioned this group to me today and I had to pop in as soon as I could. Looking forward to learning from what you folks are up to!
